President Nana Akufo-Addo has promised the world community that the future general elections in Ghana in 2024 will be free, fair, and transparent as his term as president draws to an end.
Speaking at the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Akufo-Addo emphasized Ghana’s status as an African leader in democratic administration and reiterated the nation’s steadfast commitment to democracy.
Ghana has long been regarded as having strong democratic credentials since it often ranks among the most peaceful and stable countries in Africa. Eight consecutive peaceful elections have been held in Ghana since the country’s 1992 transition to multi-party democracy. During these elections, the political parties have alternated control several times.
The world community has praised Ghana for its history of democratic stability, and the impending elections in 2024 are anticipated to be a crucial litmus test for Ghana’s sustained leadership in African democracy.
“The Electoral Commission, supported by Ghana’s security services, is well-equipped to ensure that the will of the Ghanaian people is respected,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Additionally, he emphasized how vital the nation’s democratic institutions are to preserving the fairness of the political process. “We intend to maintain Ghana’s status as an African democracy icon for the foreseeable future.”
The President’s statements are made in the midst of increased political unrest in the area, as a number of West African nations have recently seen military takeovers.
Concerning the political instability in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger—where military juntas have toppled democratically elected governments—President Akufo-Addo voiced his worries. “The current events in West Africa are extremely concerning,” he remarked.
“These coups are stark reminders that democracy is, indeed, fragile and must be continually nurtured.”
Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions and the will of the Ghanaian people. Diplomats and international observers praised Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance. Under his leadership, Ghana has maintained its status as one of Africa’s most vibrant democracies, with a strong commitment to human rights and political pluralism.
