Anti-Galamsey Coalition Appeals To Parties To Sign Anti-Galamsey Agreement

Prior to the December elections, the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has urged all presidential candidates running in the general elections of 2024 to sign a national pledge against irresponsible and illegal mining, or galamsey.

The coalition’s appeal comes after political parties and their candidates recently signed the 4th Presidential Peace Pact, highlighting the necessity of a united front to address urgent national concerns.

Letters requesting the candidates’ signatures on the anti-galamsey pledge have been issued by GCAG, a broad coalition that includes members of the media, organized labor, religious organizations, youth organizations, academics, civil society, traditional leaders, and companies.

The alliance emphasized in a statement that signing the pledge would show a common commitment to eradicating galamsey, which poses serious risks to Ghana’s forest reserves, water bodies, and environmental sustainability. The commitment is seen as a crucial step in protecting the nation’s natural heritage for coming generations.

“By signing this pact, Presidential Candidates will affirm their political will and demonstrate leadership in combating this critical issue, which has devastating implications for the nation’s environment, economy, and public health.

The GCAG said it will on Thursday, December 5, 2024, announce the Presidential Candidates who have signed the Pact.
