A group of unidentified armed men, claiming to be National Security operatives, allegedly stormed the residence of former Member of Parliament John Peter Amewu in Hohoe.
The assailants, who introduced themselves as bailiffs, asserted that they were acting on “orders from above.” They alleged that Mr. Amewu was not duly elected as an MP in the 2020 elections and questioned the constitutional validity of the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) that governed the election process.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, but Mr. Amewu was not at home at the time. Authorities have yet to provide further details regarding the invasion.
An eyewitness recounted that the armed men insisted they were there to serve Mr. Amewu with a notice regarding the legitimacy of his election. “They said they were there to serve me a notice because I was not duly elected in 2020, and that the C.I. governing the process was unconstitutional,” Mr. Amewu told Citi News.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, Mr. Amewu questioned the state of Ghana’s democratic practices. He confirmed that his supporters in Hohoe had reported the matter to the police. However, despite the severity of the situation, he has declined police protection.
During the raid, the intruders reportedly fired warning shots, prompting a brief confrontation with some of Mr. Amewu’s supporters who had gathered at the scene.
