Asuom Youth Demonstrate At Galamsey Sites [Video]

Enraged youth from Kwaebibirem Municipality in the Eastern Region’s Akyem Asuom have stormed around ten illegal mining sites, also called galamsey, to voice their objection and unhappiness over the damage of local water sources and cocoa crops.

The young person claims that many requests for the illegal miners to stop their operations have been ignored.

They bemoaned the damage done to their crops, water sources, and farmlands in an interview with Adom News.

The young people said that some miners who merely have exploration licenses—which do not allow them to mine—are ruining their farmlands and water sources.

As a result, they have urged the authorities to immediately stop the Chinese from fronting for criminal activity in the area.

The youth’s request to stop the galamsey activities in their village has received support from Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, who stated that the activities have seriously damaged their farmlands and water sources.

Nana Boadi continued, saying that since taking office as the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, he has personally attempted, without success, every avenue to put an end to the galamsey activities within the village.
