Attempted Suicide Decriminalized, No More An Offense

The official announcement that attempted suicide is no longer a crime has been sent to judges and magistrates across the country.

The Criminal Offenses Act of 1960 was revised by Parliament in June 2023 to decriminalize attempted suicide.

Accordingly, those who attempt suicide are not to face charges or be found guilty.

This was stated in a letter signed by Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, the Judicial Secretary, on October 18, 2024.

According to Justice Koranteng, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo issued the order to all circuit court justices and magistrates.

The notice pertains to the amendment of Section 57 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and Section 95 of the Mental Health Act, 2012 (Act 546) through Act 1092.

“Circuit Court judges and magistrates are to take note for compliance,” it added.
