Attorney General Wants Live Broadcasts of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Talks

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has asked the Chief Justice to permit live coverage of discussions on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

In a letter to the Chief Justice, Dame highlighted the substantial public interest in the bill as the reason for his request.

He suggested that media outlets, such as radio and television, should be given complete access to the courts to cover all proceedings related to the Bill.

The letter talks about cases like Dr. Amanda Odoi vs. The Speaker of Parliament and Another, Richard Dela Sky vs. The Parliament of Ghana and Another, Mr. Paul Boama-Sefa vs. The Speaker of Parliament and Another, and Dr. Prince Obiri-Korang vs. The Attorney-General.

The Attorney General said it’s important to make the proceedings transparent for justice to be done right.

Here’s more:

Broadcast Journalist Richard Dela Sky and Researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi are going to the Supreme Court to talk about their lawsuits against the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill and its possible approval. Because of these lawsuits, the Bill can’t move from Parliament to the President for approval.

Richard Dela Sky thinks it’s not right for Parliament to pass the bill, while Dr. Amanda Odoi thinks the bill itself isn’t constitutional. President Akufo-Addo won’t accept the bill until the Supreme Court cases are sorted out.

In his lawsuit, Richard Dela Sky wants the court to say that Parliament passing the Bill was wrong. He also wants the court to stop the Bill from going to the President for approval and to prevent the Bill’s rules from being enforced.

The Bill, which says no to LGBTQ activities and their support, has caused a lot of arguments since Parliament passed it in February 2024. Now that the Supreme Court is looking into it, we’re not sure what will happen next. President Akufo-Addo won’t make up his mind until the court decides.
