Barker-Vormawor Fined GH₵10K In Kan Dapaah Defamation Case
Oliver Barker-Vormawor ‘s request to dismiss the GH₵10 million defamation lawsuit filed by the National Security Minister has been rejected by the High Court. Justice Rev Joseph Owusu-Adu Agyemang ruled that the application lacked merit.
The court ordered Barker-Vormawor to pay GH₵10k in costs, as requested by Kan Dapaah’s lawyers, instead of the GH₵20,000 they asked for.
The court’s decision came after Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers argued that the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, overstated and exaggerated his application by using words like “bribe” or “bribery.”
During the proceedings, the Defendant argued that removing certain words from Kan Dapaah’s Statement of Claims implies there was no defamation to claim. They contended that a private individual cannot bribe a public officer like Kan Dapaah, as per his suit.
However, lawyers representing the National Security Minister opposed the request, urging the court to dismiss it and impose punitive costs. They highlighted the necessity of addressing the claims of defamation made against the National Security Minister.
Ultimately, the court dismissed the request, ruling that it lacked merit. Additionally, a cost of GH₵10k was awarded against Oliver Barker-Vormawor after the lawyers of Kan Dapaah requested GH₵20,000.
