Bawku Conflict: Mahama Ayariga condemns gruesome killing of NHIA District Director

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has issued a strong condemnation following the brutal killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, Hon. Ayariga described the incident—which involved the shooting, killing, and burning of Akugri’s body—as a “gruesome” and “dastardly act.” The attack reportedly occurred in Nangodi, near Bolgatanga, shaking communities in the Upper East Region.
“My heartfelt condolences to the family of my late comrade,” Ayariga said, adding that he “condemns in no uncertain terms” the violence that claimed the life of Akugri.
The MP called on law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations and ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. He urged the public to remain calm and refrain from actions that could inflame tensions further.
In his statement, Hon. Ayariga commended the youth for their restraint during this period and acknowledged the ongoing peace-building efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
“Significant progress is being made and no one should be allowed to derail the process,” Ayariga emphasized, urging all stakeholders to continue working towards a lasting resolution to the longstanding Bawku conflict.
The death of Akugri marks a disturbing development in the fragile security situation in the region, highlighting the urgent need for sustained peace efforts and community dialogue.
