Bawumia Opens ICT Labs At Schools For The Blind

Innovative information and communication technology (ICT) laboratories have been commissioned for the Akropong and Wa Methodist Schools for the Blind by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

In order to support teaching and learning, Dr. Bawumia also gave 104 unique laptop computers to special needs teachers at the Akropong School for the Blind.

In addition to being a national duty, the Vice President asked stakeholders to give special consideration to the educational requirements of persons with disabilities (PWDs), pointing out that doing so would enable Ghana to fulfill its international commitments.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investigating the most effective and cutting-edge approaches to care for people with disabilities, including offering teaching and learning resources and a supportive environment.

He stated on his visit:

“As a country, we want to put issues of children with special needs on the development agenda and take steps to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all,”

“The ICT Lab we are here to hand over is more than just a room filled with computers. It is a gateway to a world of possibilities, a platform for creativity and a beacon of hope for students with visual impairments to also navigate the digital landscape with confidence and ease.”

“Today, the actions we are taking here move us closer to our goal of ensuring inclusive education and access to all children regardless of ability.”

Dr. Bawumia emphasized prioritizing special education to ease parents’ burdens and improve school access. He proposed recruiting and training 1,000 special education teachers and providing training in language, speech, occupational, and behavioral therapy. Mr. Sammi Awuku, CEO of the National Lottery Authority, praised Bawumia’s humanitarian efforts and urged support for special needs schools. Awuku, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Akuapem North, also donated 600 white canes to the Akropong School for the Blind.
