Bawumia Says His Connections To Church Is ‘Since Childhood’

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice president and flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has vowed to increase religious tolerance in the nation.

He stated that the country’s reputation for religious tolerance should be upheld and that he thought he was most qualified to lead on that issue because of his background in religious diversity.

During his regional tour, the Vice President, who is a practicing Muslim, spoke to the clergy in the Volta Region about his influence as a Christian growing up in a large multireligious household.

He disclosed that he still supports the Methodist Boys Brigade, which he had joined as a young man.

The Vice President discussed his relationship with the Catholic Church, mentioning their cooperation in humanitarian endeavors such as supporting lepers.

The Vice President presented his vision for the country, which included increased agriculture, energy self-sufficiency, and tax system reform, before a large gathering of religious leaders.

He emphasized the importance of legally acknowledging the church’s contribution to national progress and promised to give it the assistance it needs.

He said:

“My relationship with the church is from childhood. It is not because I entered politics. I have been close to the church way before and will continue even after I leave office,”

“I’m saying all these to let you know where my heart is – helping the poor, helping the vulnerable,”

“I believe we need that closer relationship with the church,”

The Vice President emphasized his steadfast opposition to the nation’s LGBT promotion and his commitment to amending the Constitution to better reflect the goals for current growth.

The NPP was founded on the “strong conviction of the fear of God,” according to Mr. Dan Botwe, Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign, and the flag bearer made sure that all interactions in the Regions came before fellowship with clergy.

He remarked that when Dr. Bawumia is elected president, the relationship with the clergy will be maintained, and prayed for regularly.

Dr. Bawumia is on a day tour, meeting with the Muslim community and the Volta Region House of Chiefs. Later, he’ll interact with the youth at Ho Technical University before heading to the Oti Region on Friday. He’s joined by NPP leaders, including National Chairman Mr. Stephen Ntim and Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng.
