Bawumia vows 2029 prosecution over Ablekuma violence

The elephant never forgets – Bawumia vows 2029 prosecution over Ablekuma violence

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a stern warning to perpetrators of electoral violence during the recent Ablekuma West by-election, vowing that they will face justice if the NPP returns to power in 2029.

Addressing delegates at the 2025 NPP National Annual Delegates Conference in Accra today, Dr. Bawumia condemned what he described as acts of “violence and thuggery” allegedly carried out by NDC-affiliated individuals during the by-election, accusing the ruling party of eroding democratic values under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

“Let us focus on the violence and thuggery their hoodlums carried out in the recent Ablekuma election in the full view of the police and cameras,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He called on President Mahama to ensure swift accountability, insisting that impunity must not be allowed to thrive under any democratic dispensation.

“I again call on the President to bring the perpetrators to book and to remind them that the elephant never forgets! No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the perpetrators when we assume office in 2029, Insha Allah,” he declared.

Dr. Bawumia’s declaration drew loud cheers from party faithful in attendance.

The Ablekuma West by-election, held under tense conditions earlier this year, was marred by scenes of violence that were widely circulated on social media and condemned by civil society organisations.

Dr. Bawumia stressed that such acts are a threat to Ghana’s democratic progress and must not go unpunished. “We cannot look on unconcerned while our democracy is undermined. The rule of law must apply equally, and those responsible must face the full rigours of the law; if not today, then tomorrow.”

He also warned the NDC against any further attempts to interfere with constitutional institutions such as the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission, saying the NPP is watching closely and preparing to hold them accountable.

“Let us focus on the attempt by the NDC to undermine our democracy and rule of law in trying to remove the Chief Justice! Let us focus on their clear intention to go after the Electoral Commissioner subsequently!” he charged.

Dr. Bawumia concluded with a call for unity and discipline within the NPP, saying the party must rebuild itself on the principles of integrity and purpose to regain the trust of the Ghanaian people.
