Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP’s flagbearer, promises assistance to small-scale miners (galamseyers) if elected President. He pledges a new approach to manage small-scale mining across the country. Bawumia made this commitment during a health walk in Kwahu, Eastern Region, on Saturday, March 30. While acknowledging the government’s past efforts in curbing galamsey, he emphasizes the necessity of a revamped strategy to address the issue effectively.
If elected, Dr. Bawumia vows to implement a new strategy to combat illegal mining and safeguard confiscated equipment, particularly excavators. He emphasizes that, if in power, seized excavators will not be destroyed but preserved under his administration.
“We are going to help small-scale miners; we will introduce a mineral development bank to get money for them. There is a new regime for small-scale miners, we will not burn your seized excavators,” he said.
The NPP government has taken a tough stance against illegal mining, known as galamsey. It has deployed joint military and police task forces to illegal mining sites and introduced stricter regulations and penalties. The government established the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) to coordinate efforts. Additionally, public awareness campaigns have been conducted to educate communities about the dangers of illegal mining. Despite progress, challenges remain, and the government continues to explore new strategies. Overall, the NPP government’s approach reflects its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development in the mining sector.
