Bawumia Vows to Actively Engage Chiefs in His Government Affairs

Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the NPP’s Flagbearer, wants to change the Chieftaincy Act so that chiefs can play a bigger role in Ghana’s government. He talked about this when he met with the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs as part of his Bold Solutions Campaign Tour.

He believes it’s not right for chiefs to be left out of government decisions, which has been happening since Ghana became independent.

The Vice President lamented that because chiefs lacked the authority to make judgments within their respective territories, the law needed to be revised to grant them more authority.

According to Dr. Bawumia, chiefs should receive higher allowances. As a result, his manifesto committee plans to release a policy soon that will provide chiefs with a living allowance that would help them to carry out their responsibilities with efficiency.

What Bawumia said:

“The other major policy I want to bring is that if you look at the trend since Independence, it looks as if Nananom has been sidelined in the governance of the country, and it is a problem. So I want us to review section 63 (D) of the Chieftaincy Act to give more powers to the chief, so that chiefs can help government in the governance of the country”

“Even managing your areas becomes difficult without the powers. So we will change the law to give you more powers”.

“The Manifesto Committee is coming with a recommendation that will soon be unveiled. We will pay the chiefs living allowances. Allowances they can live on because we want you to have the resources that you can work”
