Bono Chiefs Give Gov’t One Month To End Galamsey Or Reclaim Back Their Lands

Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, the president of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has given the government one month to stop the illicit mining known as Galamsey in the nation.

He issued a warning, saying that the chiefs would have to rise up and retake their territories if the government did nothing.

When National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama made a courtesy call as part of his campaign trip across the area, the notice was served.

We’re giving the current administration one month to take legal action to put an end to those participating in the Galamsey. To stop them, the government ought to send troops and police into the woodlands.

“If the government fails to do this, the land is ours, we will just reclaim it and we won’t allow any sort of mining to take place,” he said.

Concurrently, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has demanded that gold prospecting in rivers, forests, and other sensitive places be immediately prohibited.

Nine UTAG presidents issued a statement dated September 9, 2024, in which the association called for a complete ban on Galamsey.

Furthermore, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has rendered a critical decision about the illicit mining disaster, stating that the situation will only worsen.

The GBA considers the politicization of the subject to be reckless, startling, and regretful and feels that the government is not moving the problem forward in a meaningful way.
