After failing to carry his ID to cast his ballot in the local elections in the United Kingdom, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was turned away from a voting place.
Johnson, who instituted the rule that voters present identification with a photo while in government, was informed by polling station employees in South Oxfordshire on Thursday that he would not be permitted to cast a ballot without presenting identification, according to a report published in British media on Friday.
Johnson, the former prime minister of the Conservative Party from 2019 to 2022, was subsequently allowed to vote, and according to Sky News, he cast a Conservative ballot.
Boris Johnson proposed the Elections Act in 2022, and municipal elections this past year saw the first application of the new legislation. However, on Thursday, a sizable portion of voters in England and Wales were required to provide identification, such a passport or driver’s license, in order to cast a ballot.
The majority of people were able to fulfill the new standards, according to the Electoral Commission, however it did point out that some individuals who would have wished to vote could have chosen not to attempt because they lacked valid identification.
