Cantonments Police Station: NDC Fans Demand Release Of PC Candidate

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has thousands of supporters who have gathered at the Cantonments Police Station demanding her immediate release.

The detention of Madam Okunor by the police on Friday has caused a great deal of outrage among NDC supporters and members.

With party colors on their clothing and slogans supporting Okunor in their voices, the protesters expressed their displeasure with what they saw as an unjust and politically motivated incarceration.

Background story

This demonstration is in response to a speech made by former President John Dramani Mahama, in which he vehemently denounced the Police’s choice to hold Madam Okunor.

Mr. Mahama contended that the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, gave the order for the detention, which was issued by Inspector General of Police George Dampare.

He asserted that this action was an attempt to frighten the NDC candidate in her approaching election campaign against Hawa Koomson, the current Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture.

He urged the administration and the police to protect justice and equity and demanded Okunor’s immediate release.

The police station was well-guarded, and law enforcement personnel were clearly present to keep everything in order.

Supporters of the NDC’s demand that Okunor be freed have come from a variety of backgrounds; many have urged the Police to behave impartially and uphold the values of justice and fairness.
