Catholic Archdiocese Organizes Protest Walk Against Galamsey
A “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral was followed by a protest march against galamsey, or unlawful mining, organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra.
Today, Friday, October 11, 2024, saw the gathering of environmental activists and Catholic worshipers from different areas of the capital.
Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, prayed to God at the ceremony to help fight against illegal mining’s destruction of the environment.
He urged the attendees to continue their steadfast advocacy for the preservation of Ghana’s natural riches.
At the Cathedral, worshippers, activists, and participants in the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” organization gathered, brandishing signs that called for an end to illicit mining activities.
Police personnel backed the peaceful protest by escorting the protestors along their prearranged paths.
The leader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” Emmanuel Wilson Jr., reaffirmed that an outright ban on mining operations is to protect Ghana’s environment, even though the president’s order for military participation and cooperation with the association of small-scale miners is only a temporary solution.
The protest walk is a component of ongoing initiatives by civil society and religious organizations to step up the battle against galamsey, which has severely damaged the nation’s ecosystem.
Participants started their march through the streets after the service, holding their placards aloft.
