Concerned COCOBOD Staff Urge Mahama not to appoint Randy Abbey as CEO

A group of concerned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) within the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has raised objections to the possible appointment of Dr. Ransford Abbey as the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD.

According to the group, there is credible information suggesting that former President John Dramani Mahama is set to announce Dr. Abbey as the new CEO on Monday, January 20, 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday, January 19, the group outlined several reasons why they believe Dr. Abbey is not suited for the position. They cited his alleged lack of leadership competence, pointing to his tenure as President of the Kpando-based football club, Heart of Lions, as evidence. They argue that his management of the club does not inspire confidence in his ability to oversee an industry as critical as COCOBOD.

The group further stated that COCOBOD, given its challenges over the past eight years, requires a leader with deep knowledge of the sector. They contend that Dr. Abbey’s inexperience in cocoa sector operations makes him ill-equipped to uncover and address the alleged mismanagement that has plagued the organization.

Instead, they are urging the President to appoint someone with extensive experience within COCOBOD—an individual who can quickly restore the institution’s integrity and improve its fortunes.
