Curfew On Nkonya And Alavanyo Renewed
In Ghana’s Volta and Oti Regions, the curfew hours for the townships of Alavanyo and Nkonya, as well as the territories around them, have been extended by the Ministry of Interior.
With effect from Sunday, June 23, 2024, the curfew forbids leaving the approved region between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Since 1923, Nkonya and Alavanyo have been involved in a boundary dispute. For a number of years, this land—which is abundant in bamboo, timber, and cola nuts—has been the scene of continuous bloodshed.
When a woman was shot and killed and another person was hurt in May 2022, the violence got more intense. The Volta Regional Peace Council, which stated that 85 lives had been lost since 1983, called for an end to retaliatory killings.
The dispute has been managed through a variety of strategies, including mediation attempts, court rulings, military and police operations, and stakeholder-led peacebuilding projects.
The Ministry of Interior reaffirmed the prohibition on carrying firearms, ammunition, or any other offensive weaponry in the impacted districts but did not give any particular justification for the curfew renewal.
“Anyone found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” the message said.
