Delayed Payments Force Private Health Providers To Suspend NHIS
Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has announced the immediate suspension of health insurance services for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders at all of its member facilities.

Citing the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) failure to pay outstanding claims, the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana (PHFAoG) has announced the immediate suspension of health insurance services for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cardholders at all of its member facilities.
Despite numerous promises and engagements, the NHIA owes service providers for claims from September and October 2024, according to a statement released by the association on Friday, April 4, signed and delivered by its president, Dr. Kwame Buabeng-Frimpong the association said.
The group noted that the delay has caused severe financial strain on its members, making it difficult for them to continue providing quality care to NHIS beneficiaries.
As stated in a news statement issued by the Authority on March 25, 2025, PHFAoG voiced dissatisfaction with the NHIA’s recent failure to fulfill a commitment to resolve claims by the end of March.
The group claims that guarantees were offered to creditors and suppliers on the basis of that commitment, which regrettably never came to pass.
The association emphasized that the suspension was required to maintain operations, even though it recognized the inconvenience this decision may cause NHIS cardholders.
It is recommended that NHIS clients have enough cash on hand to cover their prescription drugs and other expenses until their claims are processed.
