
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as the Acting Government Statistician, pending consultations with the Council of State.
Dr. Iddrisu, a seasoned economist and distinguished public sector leader, has had an illustrious career in Ghana’s Ministry of Finance. He currently serves as the Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division, where he leads national efforts in macroeconomic analysis, forecasting, policy research, and external sector assessments.
With extensive experience in economic governance, Dr. Iddrisu provides technical guidance for the preparation of the Ghana Macroeconomic Outlook Report and contributes significantly to the National Budget and Economic Policy.
His expertise is widely recognized across multiple governing boards, public councils, and inter-ministerial technical committees, where he influences key policy decisions on economic development strategy.
Dr. Iddrisu has previously held senior positions at the Director level, including serving as the Director of the Economic Research and Forecasting Division (ERFD) from 2013 to 2019. In this role, he supervised national macroeconomic modeling and long-term forecasting. Additionally, between 2010 and 2013, he served as Acting Director of the Real Sector Division, where he spearheaded research and analysis on sectoral growth and productivity trends.
Beyond his government service, Dr. Iddrisu is a part-time lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, and has worked as a consultant for Oxfam GB and the World Bank. He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan. His academic credentials also include a Master of Public Administration (Public and Economic Policy) from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Economics, and a BA in Economics with French from the University of Ghana.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed the appointment in an official statement issued from the presidency. Dr. Iddrisu is expected to bring his wealth of experience to the role, strengthening Ghana’s statistical governance and economic policy framework.
