Dumsor Looms As 3 Power Plants Risks Closure Due To $259 Million Debt

Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, the CEO of the Independent Power Producers (IPP), has issued a warning that three vital power plants are in danger of shutting down because of mounting unpaid debt.

He disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) owes the government $259 million, which the government has failed to pay.

The disclosure follows President Akufo-Addo’s commissioning of the Bridge Power Project, which was designed to alleviate power shortages in the energy industry.

In an interview with Citi Business News on Tuesday, November 19, Dr. Apetorgbor stressed the pressing necessity to pay off the outstanding debts in order to maintain energy production and encouraged the government to take immediate action to avoid the impending closure.

“I can confirm that all is not well, if there is no intervention before Friday, I can tell you that by Monday three key power plants will be off the grids. It is a serious matter, it is not fun,” he asserted

He also stressed that: “We have received these assurances severally so this can’t sway us. We are resolute.”

He also criticized the assurance from President Akufo-Addo that the country will no longer experience the energy shortages, popularly known as dumsor, that plagued it in the past following the commissioning of the new Bridge Power Project

“To say that the commissioning of this plant is going to put dumsor to rest I find it difficult to relate,” he added.
