Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, despite a walkout by the Minority side in Parliament.
The swearing-in, presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, followed a brief procedural standoff that saw Minority MPs exit the chamber in protest.
The disagreement stemmed from the Speaker’s decision to deny a request from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who sought permission to make a statement before the oath was administered.
Annoh-Dompreh, after catching the Speaker’s attention, attempted to raise the matter formally. However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga opposed the move, insisting that the appropriate time to make such remarks would be after the swearing-in ceremony.
Ruling on the matter, Speaker Bagbin sided with the Majority Leader, stating that the Minority would be given the opportunity to speak afterwards. Annoh-Dompreh, dissatisfied with the ruling, responded: “Mr. Speaker, we cannot be part of this swearing-in,” and proceeded to lead the Minority out of the chamber.
Despite the walkout, the ceremony went ahead without disruption, officially inducting Aubynn into Ghana’s Parliament.
Her swearing-in comes on the heels of a fiercely contested parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency. The rerun, held in 19 polling stations earlier this month, followed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) nullification of the original December 2024 parliamentary results. That decision was based on widespread electoral irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets, discrepancies in vote tallies, and procedural breaches during collation.
In the rerun, Ewurabena Aubynn secured a narrow victory with 34,090 votes, edging past the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.
