Ex-Board Secretary: No Plans By Government To Revive Komenda Sugar Factory

Ransford Amoah, the former board secretary of the Komenda Sugar Factory, has charged that the Akufo-Addo administration is to blame for the factory’s operationalization.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Amoah chastised the government for doing nothing about a $24.5 million loan that the previous government had obtained.

He clarified that in order to guarantee a consistent supply of raw materials for the facility, the John Mahama administration obtained the loan to encourage the planting of sugarcane.

However, he asserts that he has not used these monies for their proper purpose since President Akufo-Addo took office in 2017.

He said on Tuesday:

“The NPP government is not ready to run the Komenda Sugar Factory, they did not even assess the $24.5 million loan acquired by the previous government.

“The purpose of that money was to develop and plant more sugarcane. The money was meant to produce more sugarcane so that there will be enough raw material for the factory for production,”

He continued, “But they abandoned all these, so for the past seven years, they have not assessed that loan, they haven’t grown a single sugarcane but the government keeps talking about the unavailability of raw material.”

The plant, which former President John Mahama ordered before the 2016 election, has been kept under lock and key mostly because, according to plant officials, there aren’t enough raw materials to run the plant.
