Alliance of Feminist Civil Society Organisations call on the NPP leadership to address remarks made by its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), regarding Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC flagbearer’s running mate.
Chairman Wontumi reportedly made offensive comments about Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, and implied she’s a wife to Mr. Mahama and hails from the Northern, not Central, Region.
The Alliance through Executive Director Alimatu Issahak expressed deep concern over Chairman Wontumi’s remarks about the NDC running mate. They deemed the comments “completely unacceptable” and urged the party leadership to take immediate action.
The group observed that these comments originate from influential positions within the party, suggesting deliberate efforst to discredit the professor.
The Alliance criticized Chairman Wontumi’s comments as regressive and reflective of outdated views and gender stereotypes against women in politics. They noted the ongoing attacks on the NDC’s female running mate without NPP leadership’s response. The Alliance praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for exemplifying leadership through competence and integrity. The group hailed her as a distinguished scholar, dedicated public servant, and role model. They dismissed Chairman Wontumi’s remarks about the professor’s marital status and regional origin as irrelevant to her competency and achievements.
They urged the party leadership to take action regarding Chairman Wontumi ‘s behavior and advised party members against such remarks.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s current running mate is Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. She is a distinguished scholar and former Minister of Education in Ghana. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings extensive experience in academia and public service to her role, with a commitment to education and women’s empowerment. Her selection reflects the NDC’s focus on competent leadership and inclusive governance.
