A car and a number of surrounding business buildings were damaged by a fire that broke out at an illegal "Gao Gao" gas station in Teshie.

A car and a number of surrounding business buildings were damaged by a fire that broke out at an illegal “Gao Gao” gas station in Teshie.

The event happened at the station on Thursday while a car was unloading gallons of fuel.

According to witnesses, the station owners called the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) because they were having trouble controlling the fire because they couldn’t use fire extinguishers.

The fuel station, a nearby vehicle, and a number of small businesses were all quickly consumed by the fire.

Four fire tenders from Accra’s Trade Fair neighborhood, two from the GNFS national headquarters, and one from the Ghana Armed Forces were among the numerous units of firefighters who were sent to the scene.

While locals have asked for tougher action against illicit fuel outlets in the region, authorities are looking into what caused the incident.
