Four MPs suspended following Parliamentary brawl

Four Members of Parliament—Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri; Rockson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi; Alhassan Sulemana Tampuuli, MP for Gushegu; and Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe—have been suspended from Parliament for two weeks by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.

The suspension follows a chaotic altercation at the Appointments Committee, where the MPs were seen in widely circulated videos engaging in a brawl. The Speaker described their actions as a direct affront to the dignity of Parliament, warranting immediate punitive measures.

*”Let there be no doubt, Parliament’s credibility has been seriously undermined, and urgent punitive action must be taken, as this was done contemptus Parlamenti in facie parlamenti. Consequently, the following members are suspended from the sittings of Parliament for two weeks from today:

  • Mr. Rockson Nelson Etse Kwame Dafeamekpor
  • Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh
  • Mr. Alhassan Sulemana Tampuuli
  • Mr. Jerry Ahmed Shaib,”* the Speaker announced.

Background

The altercation erupted during deliberations at the Appointments Committee, where a disagreement arose between the Majority and Minority caucuses over whether to vet Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health-designate, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Education-designate, at 9:58 PM. The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in damage to parliamentary property, including microphones.

Following the incident, Jerry Ahmed Shaib and the Appointments Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, issued public apologies.
