Gabby: Tough Penalties For Gay Adults To Old Men Marrying Kids

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the NPP has highlighted the disparity in treatment between adults marrying young girls and those entering same-sex marriages.

His comments come in the wake of the controversial marriage involving Gborbu Wulomo, aged 63, who wedded a 13-year-old girl.

This event has sparked discussions about the need for stricter measures against child marriage in Ghana.

The marriage of Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, a Ga priest, to the young girl, Naa Okromo, has faced significant backlash since a video of the ceremony emerged. The wedding, which occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2024, in Nungua, has garnered widespread attention.

Gabby Otchere-Darko, known for his opposition to custodial sentences in anti-gay legislation, raised concerns about the discrepancy in punishments. He highlighted the fact that homosexuals face harsher penalties than older men marrying minors.

In February, Parliament passed a law imposing prison terms of three to five years for individuals promoting or sponsoring LGBTQ activities. Offenders caught in the act face a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years in prison.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), on April 2, 2024, Gabby criticized Ghana for overlooking child marriage while focusing on enforcing sanctions against consenting homosexual relationships.
