Ghana Drops To 55th In 2024 Global Peace Ranking

Ghana’s Global Peace Index (GPI) ranking in 2024 shows a substantial reduction in the country’s level of peace, with Ghana falling from 51st in 2023 and even lower from 40th in 2022.
Local Background

Ghana, which was formerly ranked as the second most tranquil nation in the area, is currently ranked fourth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ghana is now ranked below Mauritius, Madagascar, and Botswana in the peace index.

The Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) is the producer of the Global Peace Index, which is currently in its 18th edition. The index rates 163 nations, or 99.7% of the world’s population, according to how peaceful they are.

Ghana’s falling peace score emphasizes the importance of a peaceful election process as the nation gets ready for its elections on December 7. This is essential for preserving the stability of democracy, averting localized disputes, and dealing with new challenges.

The GPI assesses countries across three key domains:

Societal Safety and Security
Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict
Militarization

These factors are evaluated using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region continues to be the world’s least tranquil on the larger African continent. This region is home to four of the ten least peaceful nations in the world, Yemen and Sudan being the two least peaceful.
Trends in World Peace

The 2024 GPI report reveals a 17-year drop in world peace. This tendency has been exacerbated by political instability, an increase in the number of deaths from conflicts, and violent demonstrations.

The report does highlight one encouraging development, though: a greater dedication to UN peacekeeping operations, which showed the greatest improvement across all GPI metrics.
