Ghana Is In A State Of Emergency Over Polluted Water Bodies
Owing to significant water pollution, Awula Serwah, the Coordinator for Eco-Conscious Citizens, has called for Ghana to declare a state of emergency.
She claims that even though illegal mining activities have widely contaminated water sources, Ghanaians are not doing anything to stop it.
Additionally, Mrs. Serwah made the point that harmful substances might be present in the water even if it appears clear.
In the meantime, major issues with water supply have been reported in Cape Coast, Elmina, and the adjacent districts by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Central Region.
The main cause of the problem is the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant’s lack of raw water, which has been made worse by contamination from illicit mining, which has significantly decreased the amount of water from the Pra River that can be treated.
Furthermore
We still have cyanide and mercury, Mrs. Serwah stated on the JoyNews AM program. You are somewhat tricked when you see pure water since they are colorless. You can detect it at least while it’s brown, but when it’s clear, you could be tricked into believing something is safe when it’s actually highly deadly.
“So, I think the time has come for Ghanaians to march to the Flagstaff House and say we need to declare a state of emergency or call a general strike. Until a state of emergency is declared, the army should go and police these areas, make arrests, and prosecute offenders. Until we begin to take the matter seriously, nothing should proceed.”
Mrs. Serwah claimed that people are being poisoned to death and that authorities are doing nothing to stop it.
She also emphasized the need for an immediate response and mentioned how journalists have risked their lives to report on these topics.
