The greatest inland canal in the nation, Volta Lake, has had tree stumps removed for a total of GHC87.625, 090.96 million cedis by the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA).
Approximately 21,265 tree stumps were removed from the waterway with the help of the funds.
Kete Krachi Timber Recovery (KKTR) Ltd. completed the project between 2019 and 2023.
The Auditor General’s performance report on the Volta Lake’s inland water transportation safety included these information. The period of the audit was January through March of 2024.
The report covered five inland waterways—Yeji-Mankango, Yeji-Awujakope, Dambai-Njare, Bridge Ano-Ntoaboma, and Agordeke—identifying 21,268 tree stumps, of which 21,265 were removed. Three stumps on Yeji-Mankango weren’t removed for religious reasons. The GMA spent millions from 2019 to 2023 clearing stumps to reduce accidents caused by them on the Volta Lake. Despite efforts, the Auditor General found remaining stumps still pose a risk. The Auditor General recommends GMA expedite stump removal to improve safety. Many commuters remain at risk due to tree stumps and inadequate navigation technology.
