Ghana Standards Authority Establishes New Rules For Cement In Construction

To guarantee safety and structural integrity, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has established the right kind of cement for building projects.

Under the Ghana Standards Authority (Manufacture of Cement) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2480), the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) is spearheading a public education campaign that includes the announcement.

The GSA claims that using the right kinds of cement improves construction’s longevity and effectiveness.

In order to assist the public and industry professionals in making well-informed judgments, the authority has classified cement according to grades and particular applications.

Cement Types and Applications

  • Portland Limestone Cement (32.5R) and Portland Composite Cement (32.5R):
Recommended for general construction tasks, including plastering, masonry work, and screeding.
  • Portland Limestone Cement (42.5R):
Suitable for producing concrete products such as building blocks and pavement slabs.
  • Portland Limestone Cement (42.5N):
Designed for ready-mixed concrete production and high-rise building construction.
  • Portland Limestone Cement (52.5N):
Ideal for structural elements in high-rise buildings, including beams, columns, and suspended slabs.
  • Masonry Cement (MC 12.5/22.5):
Specially formulated for plastering, block laying, tiling, and screeding to deliver high-quality finishes and durable structures.

The GSA’s guidelines aim to ensure that construction professionals and developers adhere to best practices, reducing the risk of structural failures and promoting resilient infrastructure across Ghana.

Stakeholders have been encouraged to prioritise compliance with the outlined standards.
