Ghanaian soldier who rejected galamsey bribe gets promotion and UN posting

Private Solomon Asare Teye-Tsu, the young soldier who was recently honoured by a private security firm for rejecting a bribe from illegal miners (galamsey operators), has been promoted by the Ghana Armed Forces.

At an all-rank durbar held at the Burma Hall, Burma Camp in Accra, on Friday, July 11, 2025, Private Teye-Tsu, currently with the Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal with immediate effect by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS).

As part of the reward package, he has also been nominated to serve with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. In addition, he was presented with another citation for his integrity.

Decorating him at the well-attended event, which attracted top military brass, the CDS, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, urged personnel to always uphold their oath to the state and conduct themselves professionally.

“Much as acts of indiscipline will attract sanctions, professional conduct such as that of L/Cpl Teye-Tsu will attract reward and commendation,” he noted.

It will be recalled that L/Cpl Teye-Tsu, 30, was on official guard duty at the Bibiani Gold Mines late last year when he encountered a group of artisanal miners who attempted to bribe him with a large sum of money in exchange for access to their illegal mining pits.

Driven by his patriotic instinct to support national efforts to stem the tide of illegal mining and its damaging effects on the environment, L/Cpl Teye-Tsu not only rejected the bribe but also swiftly apprehended the illegal miners and handed them over to the authorities for prosecution.
