Ghana’s Public Debt Falls To GH¢726.7bn

The Bank of Ghana’s March 2025 Summary of Financial and Economic Data shows that in December 2024, Ghana’s overall public debt decreased by GH¢15.8 billion per month to GH¢726.7 billion.

The nation’s overall governmental debt was GH¢742.5 billion as of November 2024. In contrast, the debt stock increased from US$48.3 billion in November 2024 to US$49.4 billion in December 2024.

According to the report, the total amount of Ghana’s debt was equal to 61.8% of GDP. The debt-to-GDP ratio decreased as a result of the economy’s growth.

According to the data, external debt was US$28.3 billion in December 2024, which was little more than the US$28.0 billion in November 2024. The cedi’s depreciation during that time was mostly to blame for the surge.

On the other hand, domestic debt decreased to GH¢309.8 billion, or 26.3% of GDP, in December 2024. A drop in yields was the main cause of the cut. Domestic debt was GH¢311.4 billion as of November 2024.

In terms of the government’s fiscal performance, the primary balance was in deficit of 1.2% of GDP in December 2024, while the fiscal deficit-to-GDP ratio was 5.2%.
