The Northern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on two journalists by military personnel in Walewale.
The victims, Alhassan Dokurugu of Asaase Radio and Tahiru Ibrahim of Zaa Multimedia, were attacked while covering the burning of a bus at Nalerigu Junction in the North East Region. Shockingly, the assault occurred in the presence of police officers.
In a press statement, GJA described the incident as a “blatant attack on press freedom and a gross violation of fundamental human rights.” The association has called on the Military Command to identify and discipline those responsible, urging security agencies to uphold the rights of journalists and citizens in a democratic society.
Additionally, GJA has demanded that the Ghana Police Service take immediate action by arresting and prosecuting the perpetrators.
The attack has sparked outrage among media professionals and advocacy groups, raising concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Ghana.
GJA’s Northern Regional Chairman, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, reiterated that such acts of violence threaten democracy and must not be tolerated.
The incident adds to a growing list of attacks on journalists in the country, increasing pressure on authorities to ensure the protection of media personnel while they perform their duties
