GNAT Calls For Compensation For Teachers In Double-Track Free SHS Schools

Thomas Tanko Musah, the general secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has expressed concerns about the double-track education system’s insufficient pay and lack of suitable rest for teachers.

His comments come after Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum recently cautioned against ending the double-track system right now, pointing to possible negative effects on pupils’ academic achievement.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has promised to eliminate the system if it wins the general elections on December 7, was the target of Dr. Adutwum’s remarks.

Mr. Tanko Musah emphasized the critical necessity for sufficient break periods in an interview with Citi News, highlighting the significant burden that the double-track system has imposed on educators.

Noting that support for teachers is crucial to their well-being and the general standard of education, he asked the government to put in place a comprehensive compensation plan for educators operating within this system.

“Providing leave is essential—it allows workers to rest, recharge, and prepare for their duties. Even labor laws mandate compulsory leave. If vehicles require regular servicing, then humans surely need rest, too.

“Teachers in double-track schools are overworked and lack proper compensation. If the double-track system remains in place, there must be a plan to provide fair compensation. We cannot expect teachers to work around the clock without appropriate support,” he added.
