Government dissolves National Cathedral Secretariat

The Government of Ghana has officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat, marking a decisive shift in policy regarding the once-celebrated but controversial project.

Originally spearheaded by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the National Cathedral was envisioned as a monumental Christian worship center and a national symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage. However, the initiative has faced intense public scrutiny due to allegations of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and questionable procurement processes.

In a recent interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face programme, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the government would no longer commit public funds to the project. He emphasized that this decision aligns with the long-standing position of President John Dramani Mahama, who has consistently opposed the use of taxpayer money for the Cathedral’s construction.

“There are unresolved issues concerning procurement and outstanding payments being demanded by the contractor, but no one is taking responsibility because, effectively, the National Cathedral no longer exists,” Mr. Ofosu stated. “It remains an abandoned structure. What is certain is that President Mahama will not allocate GHS400 million of public funds to that project.”
