Government Withdraws All Charges Against Ofosu Ampofo In Leaked Tape Scandal

Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, the former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Anthony Kwaku Boahen, the party’s communications officer, have formally been cleared of all criminal charges by the government.

The announcement, which was given by Attorney-General Dominic Ayine, concluded the legal processes that had started in December 2019.

In order to blame the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the two NDC officials were on trial for a leaked audio tape in which Ofosu Ampofo was purportedly heard scheming to incite crimes and cause turmoil in the nation.

Plans for kidnappings, arson, and verbal abuse of prominent public personalities, such as Prof. Emmanuel Asante, the chairman of the National Peace Council, and Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, were purportedly mentioned in the recording.

Boahen and Ofosu Ampofo were both accused of conspiring to inflict injury, however the government withdrew from the trial, and the matter was later dropped.

Both men entered not guilty pleas to conspiracy to assault a public official, while Ofosu Ampofo entered not guilty pleas to two more charges of assault on a public official.
