In the recently concluded 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, James Gyakye Quayson, a member of parliament (MP) representing Assin North, was re-elected for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
With 18,023 votes, Mr. Quayson received 56.35% of the total.
Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his front-runner, received 13,599 votes, or 42.52% of the total.
Despite legal challenges and opposition from the NPP, the overwhelming victory solidifies Mr. Quayson’s hold on the constituency.
His dual citizenship with Canada caused difficulties at the start of his political career, which started with the 2020 election.
The Supreme Court declared his election invalid after finding that he had violated Article 94(2)(a) of the Ghanaian Constitution.
On July 4, 2023, he was sworn in after winning the seat and returning to parliament in a by-election on June 27, 2023.
