I Was Depressed” – Serwaa Amihere shares emotional struggles after video leak

Ghanaian broadcaster, Serwaa Amihere, has opened up about the emotional challenges she faced following the circulation of an intimate video involving her last year.

Speaking at the Ignite Youth Empowerment Thanksgiving Service, she revealed her struggle with depression and highlighted the critical support of her close friend, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, during that difficult period.

Recounting her experience, Serwaa shared how Obuobia’s simple act of kindness helped her cope. “I was depressed and crying at home that day,” she recounted. “Then she came and said, ‘Let’s go and buy ice cream.’ I wasn’t talking to anyone, but she came to pick me up. She took me to Osu, and I remember trying to wear a cap. She asked, ‘Why? Why do you want to hide your face? Let’s go.’ She bought me a big cup of ice cream and said, ‘Today, eat all the ice cream you can.’”

Expressing her gratitude, Serwaa added, “She also said she’d take me out for lunch the next day, but somehow, we both ended up cancelling. Auntie Obuobia, thank you, because I never told you how grateful I was for that ride. It did me a lot of good.”

Reflecting on the past year, Serwaa urged young people to be cautious about their choices, emphasizing how past decisions can have lasting consequences. “I went through an extremely difficult year last year,” she said. “I’m not old. I’m still young, but I’m older than many of you here. Be extremely careful about the decisions you make because, years later, they’ll come back and bite you hard in the face. That’s exactly what happened to me.”

She praised Obuobia for her unwavering support and kindness, describing her as “an amazing person.”

Serwaa concluded with a heartfelt message: “She supports me and my sister and is always advising me. So thank you. I love you very much.”

Following an independent investigation, Serwaa’s employer, EIB Network, issued a statement on July 5, 2024, confirming that no misconduct or breaches had occurred on her part. The statement also noted that criminal proceedings were underway against those who unlawfully shared the video.

In closing, Serwaa advised young people, particularly young women, to make thoughtful decisions, as their actions could have long-term repercussions.
