Inaki Williams scored twice to help Athletic Club defeat Espanyol 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at San Mamés. Williams was a major contributor to the team’s success.
With two goals in the first half that essentially sealed the victory for Los Leones, the Ghanaian striker, who has been playing well this season, set the tone for the team’s dominant performance.
In the 22nd minute, Williams scored the first goal after Álex Berenguer’s well-executed team move, which allowed Williams to finish coolly from close range. Two minutes later, Nico Williams, his younger brother, sliced through Espanyol’s defense with the perfect pass, setting up Inaki for a brilliant near-post finish that doubled Athletic’s lead.
Athletic maintained their composure and produced plenty of chances despite the absence of their best scorer, Oihan Sancet. Early in the second half, Berenguer scored a fourth goal to cap off an incredible display that saw the home team dominate the match from beginning to end.
Álvaro Tejero scored a late consolation goal for Espanyol, but it was unable to change the result.
With two more goals this season, Inaki Williams now has five for the campaign. Ernesto Valverde’s club is aiming to make it to the European championship the following year.
