Interior Minister, Prisons Director Summoned Before Parliament Over Cantonments Lands
The Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service and Interior Minister Henry Quartey have been called before the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament to appear today, Monday, July 29.
The summons relates to matters pertaining to the Ghana Prisons Service land at Roman Ridge in Accra and the Ghana Prisons Service barracks at Cantonments.
The Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice announced a series of demonstrations that preceded this development.
Starting on Tuesday, the protests are intended to draw attention to what the groups consider to be unethical land expropriation in the Greater Accra Region by political entities.
Concerns have been voiced by the groups regarding the Prisons Service properties at Cantonments, where a private developer intends to use a portion of the area for private enterprise and rehabilitate the facilities.
The deputy ranking member of Parliament’s defense and interior committee, Peter Lanchene Toobu, stressed the importance of getting first-hand knowledge before traveling to the region in an interview with Citi News.
“There have been several complaints of a businessman who has taken over the government’s land and the complaints are unfriendly, and as a committee responsible for this particular sector, we find it necessary to have a fair idea of what is happening and also listen to the people.
“In fact, we invited the director general of the Ghana Prison Service to appear before the committee and give us some briefing. Probably that will help us when we move into the area, we will have some courage and we will be able to tell Ghanaians what the state of affairs are”.
