Kantamanto Fire Victims Receive GH₵1 Million Support From Government

A million cedis has been provided by the government to aid the victims of the January 2, 2025, Kantamanto Market fire in Accra, which burned over 7,000 stores.

The presentation comes after President John Dramani Mahama made a commitment when the Kantamanto Traders Association, which is made up of thirteen distinct groups, paid him a courtesy call one week after he took office.

On behalf of the President, the government, through the Chief of Staff and other high-ranking government officials, called on the traders to pay one million cedi in compensation weeks after the fire destroyed over 7,000 businesses and devastated a big portion of the market, affecting over 30,000 traders.

In order to boost the operations of used clothing dealers and other traders, the government stated its willingness to support proposals to rebuild the market into a multifunctional, contemporary facility.

In order to prevent such events, the Chief of Staff also urged discussion on ideas to reconfigure the enclave and provide access for quick response with sufficient security.

On behalf of more than 13 organizations, Kantamanto Traders Association Chairman Rev. Opoku Afreh expressed gratitude for the support and revealed that talks were still underway with ACCESS Bank to extend a $100 million loan to construct a modern market.

But in order to resolve a dispute over the impacted land, he demanded that the government step in.
