NPP presidential primary: Kennedy Agyapong picks up forms

A group of members of Parliament (MPs) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday picked nomination forms for a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to contest in the NPP presidential primary.

The delegation of MPs led by the MP for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng and including Charles Forson of Tema West; Stephen Amoah, MP for Nhyiaeso; Lawrence Agyinsam, MP for Hemang Lower Denkyira and Dr Alex Ampaabeng, a former Deputy Minister of Finance in the Akufo-Addo administration, picked up the forms for Mr Agyapong.

Mr Agyapong is currently outside the country.

The NPP Director of Finance and Administration, William Yamoah, handed over the forms to Mr Kwarteng.

Contest

Mr Agyapong’s decision to enter the race reaffirms his long-standing interest in leading the party, following his active participation in the NPP’s previous presidential primaries.

His campaign is expected to focus on discipline, patriotism and economic transformation, key themes he championed in his earlier bid in 2024.

Primary

The party on July 29, 2025, opened nominations for the flagbearership of the party for the 2028 elections.

The party has fixed January 31, 2026, for the election of its flag bearer for the next national election.

The party’s presidential hopefuls for the 2028 general election have exactly one month to get their paperwork in order, with the deadline set for August 28, 2026.

Selection process

The vetting of the aspirants will take place from September 15 to 22, 2025, while the recommendations of the vetting committee will be submitted to the National Council (NC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) on September 29, 2025.

Any aggrieved aspirants could submit a petition between September 30 to October 3, 2025, for the NEC and the NC to look into any petition on October 7, 2025.

The names of qualified aspirants will be published on October 8, 2025, with balloting for positions set for October 10, 2025.

The party will publish the notice of poll on October 17, 2025, with the election fixed for January 31, 2026.

In the event of a run-off, it will be held on February 14, 2026.
