Krofuom Residents Clash With Fire Service Officers As Fire Destroys Trinity TVS Station And Church.
The Ashanti region’s Ghana National Fire Service is warning locals about the widespread attacks on firefighters and their apparatus due to response time delays.
Residents of Krofuom, a neighborhood of Kumasi, the region’s capital, are said to have attacked a firefighter after a fire destroyed a church and a local television station, Trinity Television.
As the fire spread through properties valued at millions of cedis, the enraged inhabitants physically attacked the firefighters, forcing them to flee.
To salvage the day, police officers had to step in and call in another firefighter.
The 18-year-old church edifice was reduced to rubble when the fire broke out on Friday morning at around 9 a.m.
The building’s contents, such as a television studio with additional support spaces and accesories were destroyed.
When fire destroyed a nearby kiosk and enveloped their building, employees and pastors at the Trinity Television station and church in Krofuom-Adoe Nkwanta had just finished their morning television broadcast.
There have been no reported casualties, and the origin of the fire is unknown.
Apostle Collins Boadi, who owns the local television station, describes the fire.
“At about 9:10 am we had finished a service and realized a container behind us was burning. A lot of properties have been destroyed. We were preparing to outdoor a new studio on December 31,” he said
As the facility’s owners and residents tried to save the few things that remained unburned, the fire was extinguished after nearly two hours.
According to reports, two fire engines arrived on the site, but the first one was attacked by irate locals who were upset with the firefighter’s slow response time.
The widespread attacks on firemen in the Ashanti area have angered the Ghana National Fire Service.
To determine the cause of the incident, firefighters are still conducting their investigation.
