Kumasi International Airport Ready For Operations by June’s End

The government has said that the project would be put into service by the end of May, therefore it is anticipated that the Kumasi International Airport will be fully operational by the end of June this year.

The facility is presently undergoing equipment testing necessary for both domestic and international flights, since it has been formally turned over to the Ghana Airports Company Limited.

Each year, more than 800,000 people from the country’s central and northern regions will be able to check into the facility.

After the new terminal opens for business, the contractors said that they want to extend the runway and tear down the existing buildings.

Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah expressed pleasure with the project’s development but voiced worries over the facility’s long-term upkeep during a tour of the project on Tuesday with Ghana Airport Company Limited management and board members.

What he said:

“My concern is not only about the edifice, [it is about] how we are going to put it to use and the maintenance level and how this thing will be functional so that our people will benefit from it. For me, that is where my concern is…We are planning to commission this facility before the end of May. We think that all things being equal we will be able to commission the facility.”

“But the fact that we commission doesn’t mean we will start operation. Because even if you commission it, you need to do more testing system and per the Ghana Airports, we are looking at by the end of June we should operationalise…All things being equal that is our timeline,”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has called on the government to hasten the construction of the Boankra Inland Port and emphasized the vital role that the airport plays in the socioeconomic growth of the nation.

He urged the government to resolve issues obstructing the Boankra Inland Port’s development while also attempting to operationalize the Kumasi International Airport.

Asantehene said these things on Tuesday during a courtesy call with the Ghana Airport Company Limited’s board and management, led by the transport minister.
