The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has announced its decision to withdraw from the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.
This, the party said, was a mark of respect for the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
“We believe that in this moment of grief and national uncertainty, unity and compassion must take precedence over political rivalry,” a statement signed and issued by the General Secretary of the LPG, Jerry Owusu Appauh, said.

It said the party’s decision was driven by solidarity with the mourning period and the need for unity and calm in the country, given the current situation.
The LPG extended its deepest condolences to the family, constituents and colleagues of the late MP, describing his passing as a profound loss to the constituency and nation.
The development comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in a similar fashion, announced it would not contest the Tamale Central by-election following the death of MP Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC ), however, confirmed its participation in the Akwatia by-election, with some party members questioning the motive behind the NPP’s decision.
