In the event that he wins the 2024 presidential election, National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Mahama has pledged to extend maternity leave by one month.
Furthermore, Mr. Mahama has promised fathers a week of paid leave to support mothers at this crucial time.
This was disclosed by the former president on Monday in Kumasi at the NDC Women Manifesto presentation.
Presently, moms can take three months off after giving birth, but Mr. Mahama claims this is not enough time for the critical early years of parenthood.
In the meantime, Mr. Mahama has stated that in order to be eligible for paternity leave, fathers must show proof of marriage.
He explained:
“By the fourth month, when a baby begins to wean, mothers often have to return to work.”
“I will add an extra month to allow mothers to monitor their child’s development before resuming their professional responsibilities,”
“This policy is for legally married men, ensuring that both parents can take part in caring for the newborn. While mothers will receive four months of maternity leave, fathers will have a week of paternity leave to support their wives and bond with their child,”
