President John Dramani Mahama will visit China in October 2025 at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed.
Speaking in a television interview on Channel One on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Mr Ablakwa said the visit was at the request of Beijing.
“China has extended a special invitation to President Mahama, and in October, he will be President Xi’s guest in Beijing,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa explained that Ghana is strengthening relations with countries in the Global South, including China, India, Japan, and the Gulf states, as Western partners pay closer attention to domestic challenges.
He said Ghana would continue to pursue its long-standing policy of “friends of all, enemies of none.”
China has increased its engagement with Ghana in recent months. In July, Beijing approved a US$30 million grant for the construction of a market in Aflao, Volta Region.
Mr Ablakwa and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Tong Defa, signed the agreement. Bilateral trade between the two countries also reached US$11.84 billion in 2024, making China Ghana’s largest trading partner, according to official figures.
Mr Ablakwa said discussions during the October visit would build on existing cooperation, with additional projects under consideration.
He stressed that Ghana’s engagement with Beijing was based on mutual respect and national interest, and not at the expense of relations with other partners.
