Man arrested with loaded pistol on Kumasi–Tarkwa bound bus at Obuasi barrier

A man has been arrested for unlawful possession of a pistol and ammunition following a routine police operation at the Tweapease Barrier near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The arrest took place on July 29, 2025, during a vehicle inspection by officers of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command. A Toyota minibus travelling from Kumasi to Tarkwa was stopped for checks.
During a search, police found an unregistered Bruni Model 92 pistol, loaded with three rounds of live 9mm ammunition, hidden inside a passenger’s backpack.
The passenger, identified as Osman Abdul Majeed, was taken into custody after failing to provide any documents authorising him to possess or transport the weapon.
According to a police statement issued on August 5, Majeed claimed under interrogation that the weapon had been given to him in Tamale by a man known only as Awal.
He said he had been instructed to deliver it to an unnamed recipient in Tarkwa.
Majeed remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned.
Police say investigations are continuing to trace the source of the pistol and to arrest others believed to be involved.
Police say they will continue with routine barrier operations and intelligence-driven searches to stop the movement of illegal arms.
They have therefore urged the public to report suspicious activity to help maintain security.
